Have you ever wondered why some people have Rapunzel-like hair and some have frizzy blond locks? That's because your hair depends on your ancestry. Scientists have figured out why our genes play such a role in the texture of our hair. Without getting into specific scientific data they have discovered a gene called EDAR.

Whether or not we have this gene determines the texture of our hair. If a specific variant of this gene is present in our anatomy then we are blessed with thick hair. What about some of us who are not blessed with this gene? Does it mean that we are stuck with fine brittle hair that no matter how many products we use it won't grow past our shoulders?

Not necessarily, thanks to beauty gurus who have created and experienced with natural DIY remedies we have a chance to have Rapunzel-like strands. The best part is that some of these products we have lying around the house.

Lifestyle

Something vital that affects our hair health are our lifestyle choices. Whether we drink, smoke or are eating the Standard American Diet, it will definitely affect our hair. The chemicals in smoking are very harmful to the hair and cause hair loss. Smoking pollutes our blood which prevents the circulations of nutrients in the body and our scalp.

By consuming alcohol we reduce our zinc and estrogen levels which affects hair growth. Before using any products or home remedies we need to make some changes in our lifestyle and how we care for our hair.

Our hair follicles are mostly made of protein so eating a balanced diet rich in protein and the right nutrients can promote hair growth. Incorporating a variety of healthy foods such as eggs, spinach, berries, nuts, healthy fats, beans, fish can have a huge affect not only for our hair but also for our health.

Hair Care

Embracing natural texture is key to having healthy hair. It's hard to avoid hot tools when there are endless of options on how to style your hair. The overuse of hair products and heating tools can cause a lot of damage to our hair. Any kind of heat we apply to our hair puts a lot of stress on our tresses (see what I did there).

Any damaged, broken or split end will prevent your hair from growing. Although haircuts help get rid of split ends getting them often will shorten the length of the hair. Instead, next time you go to the hair salon ask your hair stylist for the "dusting" technique.

Dusting is a technique used by hairstylists to save the length of the hair by cutting split ends super fast. Try getting this technique every three months.

Scalp TLC

Another important factor to promote hair growth is taking care of your scalp. Over washing your hair can deplete your scalp of natural oils needed to nourish it. Try washing your hair twice a week. If you have oily hair this will be difficult at first and feel gross but eventually your scalp won't produce as much oil. To get through this stage we recommend using dry shampoo.

The most important thing you can do for your scalp is to massage it while shampooing it or when applying essential oils. Typically our hair grows 1.5'' to 2'' a month, but practicing the remedies below religiously it should grow more then 2'' a month. If you get impatient and want long hair for a special event you can also try clip in hair extensions. They are a great way to transform your hair instantly and won't damage your hair.

As promised here is a list of our top 5 DIY remedies you can do at home for faster hair growth:

1. Castor Oil and Coconut Oil

We love this combo because these oils have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Castor oil is loaded with Omega -6 and Omega-9 fatty acids. Coconut oil adds shine to the hair while protecting it from lice and dandruff. We like combining these oils together not only for the amazing benefits but also because coconut oil thins out castor oil which has a thicker texture.

To apply, mix one part castor oil with two parts coconut oil. Soak a cotton ball with the mixture and start applying it all over your roots. Massage your scalp for five minutes and apply remaining mixture to the rest of your hair. You can leave this mixture on for a couple of hours or sleep with it overnight.

Shampoo and condition your hair. I like to shampoo my hair twice to make sure there is no left over mixture. Once your hair dries you will notice more thickness and shine.

2. Brush

How many times a day do we brush our hair? Not enough! Brushing your hair a few times a day it's very important because it will help spread out the natural oils of our scalp throughout the hair. This will help keep the hair healthy and shiny.

You can't use any brush especially plastic ones because you will cause more damage to your hair. It's important to use a bristle brush that has oil-distributing boar bristles which easily unknots snarls without snagging.

3. The Inversion Method

If you haven't heard of the inversion method you are missing out. You can easily do this method at home. I prefer using coconut oil. All you do is flip your head upside down and start massaging your scalp with the oil of your choice for a few minutes.

Only do this for one week every month. This method increases the blood flow in your scalp which promotes hair growth. Please do not practice this method if you are pregnant, have low blood pressure or any other conditions.

4. Biotin

As I mentioned earlier, a healthy diet is critical to maintain healthy hair and a healthy body. Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or the hair growth vitamin is found in many foods that we consume daily.

Biotin can be found in:

  • Eggs
  • Chickpeas
  • Almonds
  • Livers
  • Bananas
  • Cauliflower
  • Cheese
  • Spinach
  • & a lot more!

Another way to make sure that you are getting enough biotin is by taking a biotin supplement. Always consult with your physician before trying any new supplements.

5. Collagen

Collagen is a structural protein found in our bodies. This protein is available in our skin, muscles, bones, ligaments and cartilage. It is essential to our health and the good news is that our bodies produce collagen. As we age we produce less and less and we notice more wrinkles in our skin and experience joint paint.

You may ask, how does collagen affect our hair? Since collagen is an amino acid, our follicle cells use amino acids to produce keratin protein which promotes hair growth. Taking a collagen supplement can help maintain healthy hair and skin.

One of my favorite products is Bulletproof Collagen. Personally, taking this everyday has made such a big difference in the texture of my hair.

We hope you find these remedies helpful and they work for you.
