7 Summer Hair Tips + Glam Pony Tutorial

By Cashmere Hair

Summer is in full swing over here at Cashmere Headquarters, and we're welcoming it with open arms. With beaches open and weekend forecasts a consistent 75 and sunny, it's officially the prime of San Diego's weather. But summer activity comes with something slightly less desirable: summer hair. Those frequent ocean dips can make our hair dry and brittle, and more sweaty outdoor workouts leads to hair overwashing... and that's just the tip of the iceberg. That's why today, we're going to share our favorite summer hair tips to keep your tresses in tip-top shape. Read on to keep that hair bouncy, shiny, and beautiful through the summer months!

1. Switch Your Shampoos.

We all know that less is better when it comes to hair-washing. But if you're working out in the summer heat, or dipping in and out of the ocean all weekend, you're going to need to wash it. And while you might be tempting to reach for that clarifying 'poo after a long salty beach day, your hair really needs moisture, moisture, moisture.

We recommend switching your regular shampoo for an ultra-hydrating formula. If you have thin hair that's easily weighed down, you can switch between your regular shampoo and hydrating shampoos every wash or so.

2. Utilize Scalp Scrubs.

We're ditching that ultra-cleansing shampoo for the summer, which means there may be a bit more buildup than usual. Enter: the scalp scrub. This trendy new haircare item has exploded in popularity this summer, and for good reason: it's able to remove buildup to keep your scalp healthy, without strippping your hair of all the good stuff. It keeps your hair growing long, strong, and smoothes buildup at the roots for extra natural volume.

3. Invest in SPF (Bonus Summer Hair + Skin Tip)

Sunscreen for your hair? Yes, it's a thing, and it's something we should all be using. Hair SPF protects not only your scalp (PTSD from french braid part burns,

commence), but the actual strands of your hair. This keeps them from drying out and breaking under the intense heat of the sun. This summer hair tip will keep your hair and scalp safe from the sun, all season long.

4. Break Out the Hair Masks.

Summer 2020 rule: mask up! This applies to your hair, as well as your face - doing a deep-conditioning mask or treatment once a week will work wonders on sun-damaged hair. Pick one night a week to level up on self-care, slather on a mask, and relax while it repairs and hydrates (p.s. You can find our Cashmere Hair conditioning mask on our site here).

5. Saturate Before You Swim.

We all know chlorine and saltwater can do a number on our hair. But hair can only drink in so much water, which is why we're suggesting this little-known summer hair tip. Simply dousing your hair with regular H20 before jumping in will do wonders for its health. Either wet your hair in the shower beforehand, or carry a spray bottle filled with tap water to saturate your locks pre-ocean or pool. Hair will absorb less of the salt or chlorine, which means less frizziness, dullness, and breakage.

6. Lay Off the Heat.

We know, we know - who doesn't love a fresh blowout? But if you're looking to keep your hair healthy this summer, ease up on the heat styling. If you must break out the curling wand, give your hair a spritz of our Shine Spray (find it here) beforehand to protect your strands and minimize damage.

7. Break Out The Satin.

Consider this your permission to splurge (why it's one of our favorite summer hair tips). Switching your pillowcases to satin during the summer not only makes bedtime a luxury experience, but eases the damage to dry, brittle summer hair. Depending on how restless of a sleeper you are, your pillowcase fabric can greatly contribute to the overall health of your hair. Satin pillowcases minimize breakage caused by tossing and turning, and also result in less tangles upon waking. Also, they're fancy, and we like that.

Summer Hair Glam: A Va-Va-Volume Ponytail Tutorial

Now that you know how to keep your hair lush and healthy with our summer hair tips, Haley has a hair tutorial for us that will keep your hair off your neck in the summer heat! And bonus, there are no hot tools needed for this one if you're trying to avoid them.

1. Add Extensions.

Start by sectioning your hair. Note that instead of going straight across the back, this section will start above your ears, but go up diagonally towards the top of your head.

Give your extensions a gentle brushing, then clip them into your hair and let the top section down.

2. Create Volume.

This is a key component of this style, and helps create that ultra-glam look! Using a fine-tooth comb, back-comb the top section of your hair. Once it's done, add a bit of hairspray for extra hold.

3. Make Your Ponytail.

Using a hair-tie, secure all of your hair back in a low pony. You can make it tighter without flattening that volume on top by gently pulling each side.

Then, grab a small piece of hair from the bottom of your pony and wrap it around your ponytail to conceal the hair-tie. Secure with a bobby pin once it's fully wrapped around, and voila! Your glam ponytail is voluminous and ready for anything summer throws your way.
