5 New Year’s Resolutions For Healthy Hair

The ball has dropped, champagne glasses clinked, and the new year is in full swing!

With the start of a new year, people are eager to set inspiring goals for the coming months. It’s a fresh start and an amazing opportunity to make some changes in your own life.

While most people might think of new year’s resolutions falling into the category of heading to the gym more (a good sweat feels SO good!), or trying to eat more whole, organic foods (I mean, the holidays sort of left me feeling like an overfed hamster. Cute, but very full.) I have a different set of resolutions for you.

These are 5 New Year’s HAIR resolutions for healthy hair!

While these resolutions won’t have you counting calories or asking for a promotion at work, they may surprise you in the way they show up in your day to day life.

Hair has so much power to it (stick with me). It’s unique to each and every one of us in color, texture, length. It’s how many of us express our own personal style. In addition, it often times is associated as the crowning glory of femininity.

So why NOT up-level your hair game this new year? Let’s get right to it!

One: Treat your hair like a baby!

Sounds a bit odd considering the hair on your head is not actually alive. But, one of the biggest mistakes people can make is treating their hair with a sense of casualness. We can become hurried and rough when it comes to managing our hair routine, after all it’s easy to take something for granted that’s with us ALL THE TIME.

Top stylists recommend “babying” your hair. When you brush it, don’t rake through it violently (hi, guilty!). Leave enough time in your morning routine to comb through it thoroughly and without yanking hard on tangles an ends. This prevents breakage and is especially important for those with dry, brittle, or over-processed hair. If you’re blonde, this can be a huge game-changer in protecting the integrity of your hair!

 

Two: Protect it from heat

You’ve probably heard this advice before, but it’s not one to ignore. Using heat protectant products will SAVE your hair’s health in a major way. And it’s not a time consuming or costly endeavor to spritz on a heat protectant before applying that curling iron. There are dozens of quality brands within a price-savvy range!

If you think about the culmination of heat your mane endures (blow outs, flat irons, curling irons, curling/straightening treatments), it’s a lot! Stave off fried locks by using a simple heat protectant product. You’ll thank me later!

Another tip in sparing your natural hair some heat is to use extensions! By just curling or styling the extensions you can still get the look you want, but without applying damaging heat to your own natural hair. I often times will pop in pre-curled extensions and brush them through to blend with my natural hair that already has a leftover wave in it from the day before. The result is a great beach wave and less damage to my hair. These are my favorite extensions I use here.

Three: Get dirty

Sounds fun right? Another stylist tip is to not over-wash your hair. One of my favorite lifestyle bloggers will go WEEKS without washing her golden locks. Now while this may sound like quite the feat (talk about commitment), we can at least spread out our washes every 2-3 days.

How you may ask? DRY SHAMPOO! It is the absolute best. There are conventional dry shampoos, cleaner versions, and even DIY ones as well. Make sure to do your research on a product that jives with your lifestyle.

Another tip is to rock a sleek bun to conceal a little extra oil and conserve your hair’s moisture levels. Did you know that your natural oils are the most nourishing to your hair? We’re meant to have them, so let your hair…erm…marinate in them for a while if you can 🙂

Four: Nourish from the inside out

No, it’s not a mystical chant. I’m talking about what you consume! There are loads of options when it comes to consuming foods or supplements that can help your overall hair health.

One of my personal favorites is collagen. It’s the building block to things like joints, skin, hair, and nails in the body. And today there are so many options on the market! After a lot of research, I found my absolute favorite! It’s female owned and is 3rd party tested for things like heavy metals. Five: Break out the Scissors

Yes, the dreaded scissors. They are the bane of so many women trying to grow their hair long.

It’s sounds counter-intuitive to cut something you want to be long. But, in truth, a little trim will help your overall hair growth. It will stop the end breakage (no visual growth if there is breakage happening) and allow ends to continue to flourish. I’ve seen this on my own head of hair.

It’s always a begrudging decision to get my hair trimmed and while I’m horrified at the few inches lost in the beginning, within a week or two I feel how healthy my hair is! It styles better, it’s fuller, and in no time my hair has grown beyond the length it was before the trim. It just takes a little patience. Promise!
